Torrevieja is a tourist town whose life revolves around the sea and salt. Its two enormous salt flats, La Mata and Torrevieja, are surrounded by modern housing developments.
Connected to each other, these salt flats have been declared a natural park, and from La Mata they connect directly to the sea. The salt exploitation is as old as the Christian era, but had its period of expansion in the 19th century. Nowadays, Torrevieja salt is exported all over the world, and its annual production exceeds one million tonnes.
In Torrevieja, the seafaring tradition is kept alive in the important activity of the fishing and commercial port, as well as in the numerous moorings offered by the Real Club Náutico Torrevieja and Marina Internacional. At the end of the Paseo Marítimo are the docks where the ships that travelled to Cuba with salt used to load up and bring back popular songs, the habaneras, a tradition that encourages the popular choral contest that the city celebrates every summer.
